Shimonoseki City Aquarium Kaikyokan
Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi
Address: 6-1 Arukapoto, Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Japan
Kaikyokan stands on the Kanmon Strait waterfront in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, and drew renewed attention when it reopened after renovation in August 2025. Shimonoseki is nationally famous as Japan's fugu capital, and the aquarium leans into that identity with the 'Fuku Zone,' home to the world's largest collection of pufferfish species on display. It also features the large-scale Penguin Village, a rare combined dolphin-and-sea-lion presentation, and Japan's only full blue whale skeleton. With the strait scenery just outside, the visit feels strongly rooted in place rather than interchangeable with a generic city aquarium.
